My picture sunset in the rigging, was a carefully prepared landscape for the cartoon showcase.

The modern meaning of the word cartoon as per Wikipedia refers to both humorous illustrations in print AND animated films! The picture I made was representative of a typical animated film, If you use playback then there is an argument that the picture is in itself an animation. A sophisticated animated cell is far more realistic these days than the picture I was able to create. Some of the pictures left in the showcase are similar in respect and have been left in two are by me!

So why have you removed my picture? If I do not get a good argument back for this I will feel that my presence here is unwanted and my work not required.

Other pictures for example 1. A Pirate ship with scenic background. 2. A picture of Karl Marx. 3. A cottage by a stream (by myself) 4. An example of the median a mathematical term 5. A picture of Doctor Who's Sonic Screwdriver. 6. A cutaway of a typical front door (by myself) 7. A Car Interior using a play on words for Car Tune. There are a lot of examples like this and are it is the act of Hypocrites to remove my work for no valid reason.

Hi Steve...can you communicate with Think Draw and see what
they say? PLEASE don't delete or leave.....OK?

4. 15 May 2010 17:55

stevedover1965

I will not leave and I will not delete work for no valid reason. But when I do create a picture I expect a good explanation as to why it has been excluded from the showcase, when clearly other pictures in a similar vein are allowed to continue, I have no problem with those pictures or the artists the work is good...just why was my picture removed?

I have left a message in feedback referring Think Draw to this forum post and requiring an explanation. I really would like to hear what other members think about this. Opinions are welcome and might help clear up this matter.

'k, with the understanding that this is merely my opinion, not something I'm putting out here as researched referenced verifiable fact --

This particular showcase, "Cartoons", is a great opportunity for the kids and kids-at-heart members of TD, but it also was an open invitation for pushing the limits to beyond what Rachel (who is definitely a real person and may or may not have editorial crew helping) would accept in her occasional clean-up sweeps.

Bound to happen for exactly what you (steve) cited -- "cartoon" has such a broad meaning.

Sunday funnies, Marvel comics, TV shows from Bugs Bunny to Bambi to Sponge Bob to Little Bear (which has gorgeous watercolor backgrounds, by the way!), Japanese Anime... and certainly political cartoons.... and yes, the preliminary layouts of serious art works by Renaissance masters to current day are absolutely known as cartoons.

But should they be allowed in this showcase?

Gotta admit, I pushed for my 15 minutes of internal fame a bit brattily myself this time, without even my usual ploy of making sure the title gave it an excuse (generally the safest ploy), and sure enough my Ram Skull is gone, and so is my Golden Mean. I really did think that one might survive the culling ...oddly its "edge-on mean" partner has --so far.

Ditto my "emergent"... which, although it's not a published cartoon strip, and was done for a cubism experiment, seemed to me to be very much a cartoon of a primate face with a quizzical expression.

However, I have to say, in this case I just don't care enough to lodge a protest. That's not to say I haven't protested before nor won't again... I might. But this venue, while a mind-bogglingly effective workshop, is not a high powered art world gallery... it's still Rachel's privately hosted event.

...um... Steve? for whatever it's worth, I think your work is remarkable... I envy your vision and technique in a number of your pieces.

(...steps off soapbox... )

I did a political cartoon for the showcase and it was removed. I assumed that that since the showcase called for 'cartoons' and since political cartoons are by definition cartoons, there wouldn't be an issue. And it was no more or less offensive than the average political cartoon in the average mainstream daily paper.

Just went to see sunset in the rigging. Very nice, but not what I would see as a cartoon and I don't think either of us need to complain.

Well I guess you are entitled to your say, you saw my picture, did you vote for it? Pirate ships with scenic backgrounds are obviously more acceptable. Look I am expressing a view that sometimes there are double standards. If you think that I am being petty...that is your opinion! Why should I get beaten down it's not like I have much else!

We just get it wrong sometimes!

Through a lack of time, we clear the showcase pretty quickly. If a picture was entered for a reason (almost any reason) it should stay. Those reasons, however, are not always clear to us and we make mistakes. Please do not take offence, send a quick message through the feedback form and your picture will be reinstated.

On this subject, what do you think about having volunteers from the site to moderate the showcase? Would it end up causing more or less problems?

stevedover1965

Thank you TD, I will ask for re-instatement of the picture, as for volunteers to moderate showcases, there would have to be a set of rules or guidelines otherwise it will cause more problems. Leave all of the pictures in place, most people will vote sensibly so that the highest votes will represent the showcase, on the odd occasion when this is not the case then exercise the right to choose what is appropriate. What do you think?

Hey Steve I didn't mean that to sound like a glib put-down, just that the pic in question didn't seem to me any more or less like a cartoon than the average TD pic. I do take cartooning seriously, and I was enraged when I realized mine ('Obama endorses whaling') had been pulled out, but didn't seem like that big a deal in either case, on further reflection. My pirate ship is more-or-less- copied from Disney's P Pan, which seems to be closer than political cartoons to what they had in mind.

Now I have gotten the result I wanted...I feel kind of sheepish for making such a fuss, I am sorry for being such an idiot. I just felt so angry about that picture being removed. I know (chelydra) that you never intended to insult me, I was in such a mood that I was itching to snap back. Sorry!

TD --
wow... what a shift THAT would be... user-moderators? ...can "search" be far behind?? (ducking and laughing...)
I'm in favor.

steve --
nod.. altho chelydra has a couple times termed me "benign" (not "forbearant" mind you, much less "benevolent", sigh...) I'm quite thoroughly human and the rush of adrenaline when I'm low-voted or yanked from showcase or misunderstood is appalling! lol
Glad to see you've weathered this with grace, and to feel you'll stick with us.

Human, huh? Yeah, well then, where'd the alien name come from, huh? Looks Andromedan to me, or maybe Uranian.

Does it? Looks ee & IT (electronics and computing) to me. Tho' relatively rare, it's been around for several years with a few small variants to tell apart the 3 or 4 of us who seem to use it most, but it's common as mud in eBay and the like... I'm Qsilv Weatherwax in Second Life, QsilvW in youtube and gmail and (by sheer good timing) plain Qsilv here in ThinkDraw and Flickr. As an abbreviation for quicksilver it's short and easy to type; spoken, most folks just call me Q.

Firstly, hi ThinkDraw..

I think it's great that the Showcase gets cleared out - and all anyone has to do is send you a quick feedback explanation to get their pic re-instated.

In the past, we've a) had people blatantly using the Showcase to make sure their pic gets noticed (with zero relevance - and an 'oh, sorry..' afterwards), and b) lots of new players add their pic by mistake, because they think that's what you have to do to get the pic to display in the gallery.

Secondly, Steve.. go for your life, mate - I was rapt that you chose to look at what a 'cartoon' actually is, and 'though I haven't had the chance to check through your recent drawings yet, I will as soon as poss, 'cause I think your stuff is great.

Qsilv.. whoops, sorry - but are you saying your 'golden mean', etc., fell into my a) category above ?

18. 17 May 2010 09:23

Qsilv

marg -- nope, I was saying that without a carefully chosen title, I'd expected that that series might get culled, but I did think they should stay in (and they did get re-instated).

The ram skull was pushing the limit by extending the definition of cartoon to include preliminaries for further paintings. (The horn looks sooo TD-element-ish... in watercolors it'd have a smoother, tighter-ringed, less bulky feel and yet still keep the graceful line).

And I've been so proud of finally learning to spell, and remembering, your name, typing out "Qsliv" at every opportunity... sigh...
