Shanley, thank you for suggesting this challenge... I agree with you, clorophilla, about gaining a deeper understanding of the art/artist simply by trying it... I've never drawn before TD (not since childhood!) and this challenge is really stretching me into places I probably wouldn't have gone on my own. Thank you, thank you.
Here is another contribution...

wow, I'm thrilled by all these pics. I apologize for not having enough time to fill in with some relevant information. Hope I'll do that some time later, as I'm currently just passing by, just to take a look and congratulate you all for your contributions. Have fun and keep on exploring!

Had to dig up a bit on Five's pic:
Color Field painting is a style of abstract painting that emerged in New York City during the 1940s and 1950s. It was inspired by European modernism and closely related to Abstract Expressionism, while many of its notable early proponents were among the pioneering Abstract Expressionists. Color Field painting is characterized primarily by large fields of flat, solid color spread across or stained into the canvas; creating areas of unbroken surface and a flat picture plane. The movement places less emphasis on gesture, brushstrokes and action in favour of an overall consistency of form and process.

Here is another site which allows for experimentation, and some serious drawing too...

clorophilla, I must say I'm impressed that your 'Girl with a cat' is an original. I tried to make one up in this style and just can't distort people like Picasso did!! Isn't it great how we're all different?

More of a subject than a style, I suppose, but I thought I'd try a nude... I don't even know where she is or why I put her there... and if somebody doesn't think it is appropriate I will remove. Just say the word....

Thank you Qsilv for the wonderful examples!
Poinitilism is definitely one my favorite art movements, so here is something about it: Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of pure color are applied in patterns to form an image. Georges Seurat developed the technique in 1886, branching from Impressionism. The term Pointillism was first coined by art critics in the late 1880s to ridicule the works of these artists and is now used without its earlier mocking connotation.

Hope this will open your appetite for some more pics.

Also, if 'classic styles ' don't inspire you much these day, you can always try something modern. Like pop art (Andy Warhol probably sounds familiar, if not: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhol or simply take a look at the portrait of Liz Taylor, by Puzzler..it's posted in the beginning ) -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_art
