Ok, I'm half-asleep here so this is totally unpremeditated, just came to me while I was staring at the part I'd been fussing over the most in trying to get the "look" I wanted. It's a bit tricky, and interesting to ME to play with. Hope you all enjoy it too!

Cast shadows can range from strong shapes, like this eerily fascinating one of shosho's --

to the stuff under my own Rhino's nostril, lip and jawline, not to mention that subtle darkening of the front of his eye-white...

...or anything else your wild & ever-fertile imaginations stretch it to.

Runs through next Sunday, 7th of March, '10 ...I'm on Pacific Coast time, so that'll be 9pm mine, midnight TD time, and already Monday morning for our Brit/European/SAfrican pals. Sorry, no procrastination margin for the Hawaiian contingent ;>

just a quick link for people who are not familiar with the demands of this challenge: http://painting.about.com/cs/paintingknowhow/a/shadows.htm
it was surely useful for me, i didn't even know there are two types of shadows. Interesting subject, Qsilv...I'm over my head between wrok, school and whatever's left of my private life lol, but I'll do my best

Nice clear article, with fun links to other related things to think about.

In my own mind, it's more just a matter of how much light there is, and where (noticing the amount of blur in the edges), and what colors are there.

Reflection of other colors adds richness in the shadowed areas as well as in highlighted ones, so that's another aspect always worth considering!

One of the things we get to do in painting, is emphasize aspects... get them a bit out of balance deliberately... like increasing the garlic in your mashed potatoes... or adding a bit of nutmeg to the spinach... chopped apples and a drizzle of honey in your salad... ;>

this was done for the Wrincles & crinkles challenge, but - heidi - I was too late!
Anyway, I had a lot of work with the shadows on his face!

This one I just did on a whim actually has some significant shadow-work... it would have looked very different with just a flat pattern:

This one's turning out to be a bear, is it? But those of you who HAVE brought in shadow pix have done such fascinating ones!

Oh yes, by all means, "optimize the efforts"... since I feel so guilty for playing here at all, I put LOTS of effort into dreaming up ways to do that! heh heh...
