Here's an idea. Put the Comments box and the Vote button together into a single Submit action.

Once a vote is cast the system knows you've already voted (try voting twice for an image and notice the count doesn't go up). It could then present just a plain old Comments box.

Seems simple enough!

And we would then know who's doing all the threes and fours and leaving no comments. Even if the leave nothing in the comments box their name would still appear alongside their vote!

I've repeatedly said I don't care about ratings. But I'm getting really, really mad at the absolute effort to push down ALL of my ratings. Someone is going through my gallery and systematically voting ALL of my pics down!

This is ridiculous!

hmm.. yes, Ron.. guess you haven't noticed from our comments that it's happened to most of us

I DID notice. But I didn't realize people were going through ENTIRE Galleries and hitting every picture.

Alas...

Hi Ron, I've suggested several times that the identity of the voters be shown. They should take responsibility for their votes.

Oh yes! It happened to many of us, just before the end of the nonth, when we had no chance of recovering. Your idea, if I fully understand it, is: clicking on a picture automatically puts the viewer into the comments/vote box. No going back ... they have registered a vote and can please themselves whether or not they leave a comment. That seems to me to be the best idea to date. So uncomplicated and no way of messing about with the votes. Any multiple comments must, of course, be prevented fom becoming multiple votes.

That is a very clever idea. Even if it didn't show what they voted it would still mean they would show that they'd been there. They should know that if they continue to do it people would be able to look back and figure out who it was.

...I also like what I read yesterday about vote 1-100 instead of 1-5... Those that are 5 only voters could have a 90-100 range to vote in.

...90-100 would be the equivalent of 4.5-5 vote for the mathmaticaly challenged...

...Those not afraid to give a 3 or 4 would have a much wider voting range...

...I can not imagine a 100 only voter would exist... therefore an 80 would not be a death sentance but a setback & a challenge the way a 4 vote was intended to be...

Quick question... cos maths and me had a very strong disagreement a while ago and are no longer on talking terms... wouldnt a 1 in a 1-100 system hurt more than a 1 in the current 1-5 system?

However if you still could have a larger area of gray

I like the larger range as well...

We would just need to make sure that 5 only voters did not turn into 100 only voters...

If we use 100-1 system then I think voting should be almost required (where there is an option to not vote at all... however you may not change your mind later about this?)

We just need everyone to actually rate instead of giving a 5, since giving a 5 and then not giving anything instead of giving a 4, 3, 2, or 1 is like a no vote, vote system and skews the curve a large amount.

Ron, did I misinterpret your idea, or have I got it totally wrong. On this stream, people are still talking about 1 - 5 votes and being able to tell how someone voted. I thought you meant that if they clicked on a drawing, they had voted .... no choice of 1 - 5. The only choice they would have is whether or not to leave a comment. The votes would all be 1 vote, with no possibility of voting down.

i still think the best idea would just to have a vote or no vote option, then all the pictures would be ranked by most votes, which already is the best way to view the best pictures

If we do a no vote/vote option to decide on "top" pictures we would need to do a rolling top 5

But Ron's idea is exactly what that is..... a vote / no vote system. Read his idea again. If you click on the picture, you register a vote (no 1 -5 ... just a vote). If you don't click on it, you don't register a vote. The joy of this idea is there is no possibility to go into the comments box without voting ... it's automatically a 1 vote. The only choice is whether you they make a comment or not, when they are in there. The vote can't be retracted and nobody can vote down. It's brilliant.

OK, I've just read Ron's idea for a third time, and I think I misunderstood part of it ... he is still leaving the opportunity for 1 - 5 voting. But my first interpretation of his idea seems to solve two problems in one fell swoop. The down voter would no longer have the ability to fix the ratings, and we would have a 'vote / no vote' system

Folks - it's just one of many ideas we've all been floating.

I'm leaning towards Matthew's idea of every picture getting a deafult vote of 1 when submitted (it needn't even be seen - just calculated).

But I still would like to run it through some test data to see the actual result.

The idea I floated here is to allow existing voting but to REQUIRE a comment when you do vote. That way the blitzers would have to reveal themselves. This would do away with nothing current except the anonymity which ir, really, what allows the blitzers to exist at all.

I do not mind low votes. I just don't want them out of malice and I would appreciate comments even from low or no voters.

Ron, while you are doing your mathematical testing, will you please try out your suggestion, made on 5th Feb in "A different idea for top 5", also supported by Rachel, me and others ... I quote ... "NO RATINGS! Except a single button named "I Like It" or somesuch. People that don't like it won't vote. People who do will. No chance whatsoever for blitzers or onesees or twosees. In the end it's just a simple count of "I Like It" votes. What could possibly be more fair?"
The same suggestion came up again in Force Comment to Allow Vote on 6th Feb. Has anyone come up with a reason why this would not work. It is so simple and cannot be tampered with (other than people's friends and family all voting for them out of loyalty). I am convinced the Vote/No Vote is the simple answer and, linked directly to the comments box, it is all done in one simple action.
Can you put that to the mathematical test or is it so simple and near foolproof as to defy mathematical testing?

I'd like to vote and comment without having to submit twice! I sometimes forget to vote at all because I can't seem to remember to vote, submit, comment, submit.
Seems simple, I know, but I'm naturally blonde so, you know, Please Speak Slowly.....
