Baldur

This new thread is for people who want to post their answers to the Radio Baldur challenges before the deadline. That way you can have the glory of being the first to solve them correctly and still not give the answers away for those still playing the game

Good idea, Baldur!

Came up with 25:
EATERY
LINEAGE
CALCIFY
HORSEMAN
IGNEOUS
ANTIQUE
SURPLUS
VALIUM
BRUSHING
REALTY
B ARON
ESSAY
ANTEDATE
RELIANT
THESPIAN
OUSTED
HERMIT
CAVED
BREADING
RESPITE
HARPIST
BE ANPOT
CHIDES
HELL
ARSENIC

I think the trick was to use each fragment just once.

What I did to use 'em all up:

ANTEDATE ANTIQUE ARSENIC BARON BEANERY
BREADING BRUSHING CALCEOUS CAVEAT CHIDES
EDIFY ESSAY HARPIST HELL HERMIT
HORSEMAN LINEAGE PITEOUS POTTED REALTY
RELIANT RESIGN SURPLUS THESPIAN VALIUM

Some I really, really wanted (especially since I was sure ANTIQUE must be a red herring!) were:

BARREL BRUSQUE CALCIFY CHILL CHIANTI HEED HERON
CAVEMAN SURREAL TEDIUM VALIANT. Alas, too many spare parts.

Wow! I love OUSTED and IGNEOUS. (EOUS was my greatest problem.)

Baldur

Here is Baldur's official answer list:

CAV EAT
IGN EOUS
CHI ANTI
ANTE DATE
LINE AGE
THES PIAN
SUR PLUS
REAL TY
HAR PIST
ES SAY
HER MIT
ARSE NIC
HE LL
RES PITE
OUS TED
DES POT
BRUS QUE
HUNG ED
CALC IFY
VAL IUM
REL IANT
BAR ON
HORS EMAN
BEAN ERY
BREA DING

The words that Baldur expected to throw everyone into a tizzy were:
IGNEOUS
BRUSQUE
and
CHIANTI

Remember that marg rocked the first round of this game, solving it in barely a half hour. This round needed to be far more devious.

What is sometimes hard to judge is the regional use of words. I was hoping for a list that would be at least recognizable in the English speaking parts of the world, but much of that is guesswork.
There are words that anyone in Primrose would know such as: QUAHOG and CLAMCAKE that might confound just about the rest of the world.
It would be unfair to use such words.
Perhaps BEANERY is too regional a Northeastern US word as well.

Baldur

Just for the record Baldur hates the word EATERY also.
To me the word conjures up images of institutional food shoveled onto your plate.

BRUSQUE is a great old word that marg eliminated early on from her list of contenders, that may have been her downfall

CHIDES appeared in sheftali's list was an intentional trap that Baldur set hoping that someone would use to tie up the DES fragment. In my mind the puzzle couldn't be solved if that word was created. shelftali proved me wrong and danced around the obstacle.

Tomorrow I will copy the answers over to Radio Baldur

sheftali52

After much contemplation, Sheftali offers a possible solution to the latest word arrangement puzzle:
OLD
MAN
AGE
MARK
DOWN
HOME
RUN
SPACE
TUNE
OUT
WARD
OFF
BEAT
UP
FRONT
SI DE
BOARD
ROOM
SERVICE
CALL
BOX
CAR
POOL
GAME
POINT
BLANK
PAGE
BOY
SCOUT
SHOW
GIR L
TIME
WARP
DRIVE
BY
LINE
DANCE
FLOOR
MODEL
TOY
HOUSE
CAT
NAP
KIN
SHIP
SLIP
CAS E
BOOK

Probably not "the" solution, but plausible, I think. At any rate, it was a lot of fun!!

11. 21 Sep 2009 18:59

Baldur

ooops
in #7 there is a typo
it should read

HING ED

12. 21 Sep 2009 19:02

sheftali52

btw, in post #7, HUNGED is an answer to the last puzzle? Hmmm.....

13. 21 Sep 2009 19:03

sheftali52

How funny, Baldur, that my comment came right after you posted the correction! LOL

14. 21 Sep 2009 19:08

Baldur

Sheftali you have made good progress but indeed it differs somewhat from my answer.
There are many pairings that are different than mine but still valid, but there are 4 pairings that I don't readily accept
namely:

SPACE TUNE
SCOUT SHOW
SHIP SLIP
BOOK OLD

I guess SCOUT SHOW could refer to an exposition of junior woodsmen but it's hardly a commonly heard phrase.
Also BOOK would need to precede OLD when linked back to the top of the list, making it BOOK OLD. That just doesn't work

Baldur

Twisted minds think alike.

sheftali52

Okay, then, Sheftali slinks away with tail between legs for another look.

17. 21 Sep 2009 19:16

Baldur

One would question where the tail came from, but indeed Baldur has his own questionable periphera (+18 points).
Every morning I must tap each side of my forehead with a mallet lest my horns start protruding again.

sheftali52

I see others have not posted the answer to the latest puzzle yet. Whew--that makes Sheftali feel a bit better, as she has not resolved the disconnects in the puzzle. I'll stare at it a bit later, with hopes of new revelations.
