This may have already been answered in a thread that I missed in here, but I'm trying to figure out how the Top 5 are chosen now. There used to be an explanation with the top5 saying that it was determined by a mean of blah blah blah. I'm no mathemetician, so can't remember details of that. But anyway, is it still determined by just votes, or is the Favorites factoring in now, too? I ask because I have quit voting. I really believe the voting should not be anonymous, and I like the favorites system because it is NOT anonymous. I also quit voting because the same people are using different usernames, and I just think that is deceptive, and I don't want to support it. But I am sometimes putting pics into my favorites with the hopes that it will help someone get a top5. Does it even matter? Does this confusing question make sense?

I dont know what's going to happen next, Robin, but like you, I prefer the 'favourites' way of voting (except that it's very difficult to choose only five ... probably a necessary restriction). I think we are going to have to wait and see ... I have no idea how Top 5 were worked out for July.

wish I knew how the favourites idea is supposed to work !

I love the ability of choosing personal favourites - although I haven't picked any yet (but the two I can see in this thread are DEFINITELY going to be).. has anyone worked out the rules yet ?
can you only pick 5 in each category or 5 total for the month ?
can you change your favourites half way through the month ?

In Answer to Marg's questions- you can pick 5 in each category per month, and you can change your favorites at any point. there is a simple check box on each pic that you can check or uncheck depending if you want to to keep it in your favorites-

Robin- i have no idea, Tho I recall them saying something about keeping the way the top 5 is picked a secret so that it can't be manipulated as easy- tho that may have been a suggestion by a user rather than one from Rachel.

That was a suggestion I had made back when they were changing the top 5 selection process the last time...

That said, I am sure they plan to use a weighted average between #1 Highest rated, #2 Number of ratings & #3 Number of times chosen as a Favorite... What gets what weight I still think should be kept quiet to keep manipulators in the dark...

I would like to know WHEN favorites will start being used...

thanks, Arw.. guess we'll all just have to wait and see !

I like voting, so I'll keep doing that, although Favourites is currently still a bit unknown, and I don't want to 'use' that to promote pictures I like, until I get a better idea of what effect it has on the Top 5.

I've started voting again with a five or nothing (My version of a vote no vote) because from what I understand there is a requirement for a certain amount of votes for a picture to even be considered and I'm using My Favorites as well hoping to make a difference there too.

My question is does anyone know if when you search This Week and Last Week is it the calendar week or the last 7 days and do they butt up to one another or is there possibly a gap or overlap?

Anyone?

Marg... WILL be to promote the pics you like...

It will be your way of saying "these are the pics I would like to see make the top 5"... of course there will be tons of us choosing OUR pics that we want to see make the top 5...

For those who do not choose favorites, it will be a disadvantage to those of us that do use it...

You should know that you can NOT choose your own pic in your favorites...

FOR EXAMPLE: Lets pretend that ... Artist #1, #2, #3, #4, #5 & #6 are the only artists that exist in the world & they all draw ONE pic in flowers...

Artist #1,#2, #3, #4 &#5 chooses the other 5 pics as his/her favorites...
Artist #6 Chooses nobody

Now artist #6 has 5 selections as a favorite while the other artist have only been chosen 4 times...

Is artist #6 being rewarded for not using the system???

The example is simplified & it would never happen JUST like that... but when it comes to a close race 4 top 5, It may just be the difference maker ...

Just food 4 thought...

It appears to be a calendar week, but I am trying to catch the change over to verify my theory...

I looked at animals as that seems to be the most consistent and I believe it is by the calendar and that they butt but not overlap.

I love the favorites because I can come back and review pictures at my leisure. I like that when I get too many favorites of any palette I can see all of the pictures I like juxtaposed and see what I really like best. problem is there are so many great pictures it is hard to limit myself but I love to look back and see favorites from other months as well. I didn't draw much last month because I was gone but I am happy to see that many new artists are in the top 5. as usual the art is all worthy. but then I am not sure what I may have missed when I was gone. thanks Rachel for addressing these issues. I am also pleased to see that the showcase seems to rotate according to time drawn rather than most 5 votes staying on page one. this should please those who feel their efforts never got to be seen because the first page was full of "old" (even if wonderful) art

I'm also a big fan of the new way the showcase is displayed. It does give all of us a chance to see the newest piks that we might like to vote or comment on and not have them buried at the end on the last page or stuck somewhere in the middle because of OVB's. It is also nice that at the end of the showcase Rachel deletes the pics that don't belong and rearranges them so that the top "vote" pics are displayed in order. Then its too late for the manipulators to have at it.
I love doing the "favorites" section. Now I have a place I can view my favorite piks all the time instead of them being "lost". Also if this is a portion of the process for the Top 5 each month then we all need to push the "regular" folks to start using it. I know it took me awhile to learn how this place works and doesn't work (lol), so how can we help the newbies assimilate?
