That's what I found:
Altogether there were 29 flights.
The very first one July 22, 1951 - 2 dogs- Dezik & Tzygan("Gypsy"- in Russian), rocket P-1, place named Kapustin Yar. 15 minutes flight, catapulted with the parashute, survived. The second one, a week later -Dezik and Lisichka("Fox" - in Russian). The parashute did not open. That started a long list of victims: Albina, Mukha,Chaika, Belaya... Than, November 3, 1957 the dog was sent to space, you know this dog as Laika. This dog lasted about three hours, but the whole world kept receiving reports on her condition for several days. That were lies and only those who were involved in the "experiment" knew that!!! For several month this spaceship was making rounds in the space orbit and, finally, in April it entered the atmosphere and burned down. Than came Belka & Strelka's glory flight. Their flight lasted for over 24 hours and they returned back alive. Later, when Strelka had puppies, one of them, Pushok ("Fluffy") was given as a gift to Jakelynn Kennedy. After that the head of the space program, Korolev said:"Two more successeful flights - and we will send the man". There were four flights: first - 2 dogs never came back, the spaceship was lost, headed towards Jupiter, secong - the spaceship had technical problems and emergency landing, dogs survived. For the next two they decided to send one dog instead of two. And 2 dogs, Chernushka("Blacky") and Zvezdochka("Star") both made it around Earth and came back. After these only 2(!) successful flights Yuri Gagarin was sent to space...
Interesting? I foung that in the book of Aleksandr Milkus, one of the ingeneers for the space program

Thanks for all those details, A4! The "Space Race" started when I was in my last 2 yrs of High School. Don't recall all those names, but "Laika" is also the one that stuck with me. Nice to know its meaning.

Dragon

Moxy Fruvous did a song inspired by the Space Race called 'Laika' after the space pooch. I've had it running through my head since someone first asked about her.

Moxy Fruvous
Laika

When I was 3, my mother said to me
Eat up your greens and say your grace
While on TV they put a dog in space
And left her there... you should've seen her face

When I was 5, the dream was still alive
And Walter Cronkite said: "One day we'll earn our daily bread
Conducting things in outer space"
But still on earth I thrive... and you pretend I'm not alive
And walk by with my substitute
While I fasten the oxygen valve on my space suit

When I was 8, we shared a cloakrack - it was great
And I pretended I had so much on my plate
I had a speech to write, about moonshot trajectory
And during phonics class, perfected my delivery
Now the band's playing "Hail to the Chief"
While my capsule's out floating by some tropical reef

all the experts can agree on, regarding your motives
in the cape canaveral crash... is that they know nothing
it puzzles me so...

Now I'm full grown, and I've a spacecraft of my own
But there you sit, still upon your Earthly throne
Hey darling, throw this 'space-pup' a bone
Don't touch that dial, don't hang up that phone

Thanks a4. There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there. The stuff that I have read claims that the first few 'dog' flights did not go out of the earths atmosphere ... and that Laika's was the first that did. We were probably fed a lot of propaganda ... which has now gone down in history.

Thanks ae, Login.... I then have to conclude that as Login said everything was full of Cold War propaganda... but since we have a Russian-speaking TD member she could teach us some words in Russian. I know the alphabet is different but she could tell us some words phonetically.
