Ria, your site is fantastic and I will definitely give one of those pics a go, but I work long shifts the next 3 days, so might not have time til next week. I really like this type of challenge!

Could there be other batiks? Here only artisans sell what is called "batik". I've heard they take some fabric, make knots in parts of it and dip it to dye it. When they take it out and it's dry and they open the knots, the fabric has different hues of the same color in a random manner. It looks kind of beautifully faded in some areas but it doesn't have definite drawings. They call it batik here. Ever heard about this? Does this also exist in Malaysia or elsewhere?

Polenta, what you are calling batik sounds like what we call 'Tie -Dye'.

Batik, in the sense that I know it is painting with melted wax on a fabric to cause a 'resist' when dyed. You start with the lighter colors of dye and add more wax each time to build a multicolor design when the wax is later removed.
A similar process is used in the Ukraine to make Pysanky eggs for Easter.

polenta, here, when they tie knots and dip it in dye, it use to be called "tie dye". I have a few batik pieces that were gifts, and they are not, like you say, tied, and dyed. Mine were done with a wax after a dye process, then hand stitched! Also the batik, has a defined drawing.

Thank you..
Batik (pronounced 'Bah-Teak') is a technique used to dye fabrics. Batiking is a relatively straightforward process that often produces beautiful results.

* First, melted wax is applied to the fabric in the areas that are to be free of dye. There are various methods used to apply the liquid wax, but brushing or directly pouring the wax are the most common. Once the molten wax cools, it hardens and penetrates into the fabric. Next the fabric is soaked in dye. The wax prevents dye from penetrating onto the fabric and therefore keeps those areas of fabric in their original color.

To remove the wax after the dyeing process, a solvent can be used. Alternatively, the hardened wax can be pressed out with an iron; the hot surface melts the wax it is pressed through the fabric. If a multiple-colored design is desired, the process is repeated for each color.

Many fabrics can be used for batiking, but plain, light colored cotton seems to work best. Cracks in the wax allow thin lines of dye to penetrate through

What I can see then is that it's really a process of great artistry .... and patience. Each batik is a piece of art. Thank God, Ria that you reappeared. You see how much more you are teaching us!!!

Ria - I'm calling on your sense of humor because this "batik" is nowhere near the artist quality of yours!!!
