If Tom gets two apples from Peterand three bananas from Sally, how much does he get?
TWO APPLES AND THREE BANANAS because they DON'T belong to the same kind.
If Tom gets two dollars from Peter and three dollars from Sally, how much does he get?
FIVE DOLLARS.
Elementary Watson.
Does anyone understand what I mean? You don't have to be an economist ......

I think I understand you, polenta.. but I'm not sure Think Draw does..

TD doesn't... The accumulative voting is by far the most agreed upon system by the masses...

...BUT... it involves a change in an extant system -- horrendously difficult/depressing to implement.

My suggestion (repeated now and then tho' usually silently received around here) is to fix the biggest problem the extant system causes-- being "disappeared" to a relatively lost page. (Yes, quite a few great souls do check deeper. Still...)

ADD a SEARCH feature --with top notch filter options.
..........I'd like to be able to ask specifically to see "most votes from the Water showcase"
..........or... "most votes from January 2009"
..........etc

AND... (ever-greeedy) I'd ALSO like to be able to search the Forum for words I remember...
and, following usual forum practices, click the name of any post-er and see a list of all his/her past posts (which I can then read by clicking).

That sums it up prefectly, Qsilv. Pity it's such a difficult job to do ... I know nothing about such things but I can imagine the difficulty.

I think we can use votes to praise and to value, never to diminish something. I will repeat my reasoning.
If you have 100 dollars in your saving account and someone deposits 4 dollars he ADDS to your account, and if he adds a ONE he still ADDS.
That's why art has nothing to do with numbers!!!!! LOL
And up to the day the owners of this site (I suppose Rachel) tell us that it is ONLY FOR ART, I still think that we, simple doodlers can be a part of THINK DRAW as "artists". I'm still waiting for all this mess to finish to say WHAT I LIKE ABOUT TD.
What I mean is : LET'S START THINKING POSITIVE!!!! so the consummate artists we have can feel at ease producing and we, simple amateurs, can live in a positive atmosphere.
May God help us!!!

I must respectively disagree Qsilv... I think "most recent" should be the default setting for all pages... with other search options...

But the voting causes the most internal issues... they have already made a change once already to the voting system... How hard could it be to switch to one of the two systems that have been suggested to end the negitivity to the one vote bandits...

A "vote or no vote" or an "accumulative vote count" system is what is needed

With either of those two systems, Pics would no longer drop off the face of the earth with a 4 vote...

Well.. I actually don't think it would be that hard, Qsilv..

..of the current 3 filter options, keep 'most recent' and 'most ratings' as they are now.. BUT change 'highest rated' to be accumulative based (see next posting for what I suggested before)

.. add an additional filter for 'last day', 'last week', last month', etc., and allow both filters in the showcase and gallery

.. leave the gallery default view as is (most recent) and change the showcase default view to 'highest rated'

.. calculate the 'Top 5' based on 'highest rated'

.. and if we could get that, we could ask for LOTS more search options as the next step !

marg

what I mean by 'highest rated'.. and sorry to repeat it if people don't agree..

My request is that:

1) ratings are accumulative - i.e. a straight total of every 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 rating given to a picture - highest total is top

2) if 2 or more pics have the same total, than the one with the most '5's is tops

3) if they're still equal, than the one with most '4's, followed by '3's, '2's and finally '1's

4) if they're still equal.. than the first submitted (earliest) is top

N.B. it's total bull hockey to say that pictures submitted late in the month have less chance - we all know the rules (midnight of last day, TD time) and the fact is that most pics get most of their votes in the first 24 hours.. see Miss_Dagny's 'Jumper', if you don't believe me).

Plus side.. anyone who wants to vote a '1' is still adding to the rating - and everyone else can rate a pic according to what they really think it's worth (maybe 1-2 for 'nice effort' or 4 for 'really good', without having to rate everything a 5 or blast the picture's chances).

My serious request to Rachel and Think Draw is - can we PLEASE try this for May ??

nodding... hold on, loves -- it's not disagreeing with me to say the default should be by date... wanting a search feature isn't in conflict with that at all.

And I don't disagree with polenta or with what marg is propounding either.

I'd love to see the vote system be purely accumulative. No fancy percentages.
I've always wanted that. And that way it wouldn't even matter all that much whether each person can only vote a single point or up to any cap (like the current 5).
In fact, the middle votes which now are utterly wasted would gain validity again.

The trick is to avoid a single vote being effectively a veto that overrides dozens of others.

As to how much trouble it is to change... well, only Rachel can decide that. Her stonewalling for months gives us a strong clue that it's got some heavy baggage for her.

In sum... either way, I want the ability to arrange searches by filters...
BUT... I back --and would hugely appreciate-- EXACTLY the changes marg is listing.

(but you'd be welcome in any guise!)
