Wow. I never would have thought I would win a challenge in my first 10 days on TD. Fortunately, I have cathyallheart around here to help me figure out what I'm doing.

I'm wanting to do a kind of back-to-school thing, but I know a lot of us aren't really at that stage right now. At any rate, as an older student/homeschooling parent/librarian-type, I'm all about lifelong learning. So feel free to hit the books on this one, but lets think beyond the institution of "school" and really consider what it is to learn.

I'm going to have this go until Thursday August 4th (the last day of summer term) and I will post my decision on the 5th (before I get buried in developing lesson plans for fall).

Cathy here tells me I'm being too vague. I'll work on coming up with a few examples in the next couple days, but here's a few quotes on learning to get you thinking:

I am always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught. ~Winston Churchill

I am still learning. ~Michelangelo

Most learning is not the result of instruction. It is rather the result of unhampered participation in a meaningful setting. ~Ivan Illich

Be done with rote learning/ And its attendant vexations. ~Lao-Tzu

You learn more from getting your butt kicked than from getting it kissed. ~Tom Hanks (not really sure how this fits with my idea, but an awesome quote, no?)

Children have to be educated, but they also have to be left to educate themselves. ~Ernest Dimnet

Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education. ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

Do not use compulsion, but rather let early education be a sort of amusement. ~Plato

In education the life of the mind proceeds gradually from scientific experiments to intellectual theories, to spiritual feeling, and then to God. ~Kahlil Gibran

I have never let my schooling interfere with my education. ~Mark Twain

Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one. ~Malcolm Forbes

Anyway, just some thoughts. Hope this gets you thinking. I'll come up with a pic or two soon.

I'm liking what I've seen so far, but it looks like a little more time might be good. My end date was pretty arbitrary, so let's go until the end of this weekend (Sunday night), and see what we can come up with. I've got another idea or two to play with myself. ;o)
