Today I posted a request through FEEDBACK asking if it would be possible to be able to edit a picture after it had been posted.

Do you think this is a good idea?

If you do please add your support to this topic, I have often posted a picture then wished I could change some element of it afterwards.

Perhaps there could be a time limit where this might be possible after submission.

Please add your ideas or even say if you think this suggestion is either good or bad. This way Rachel and her Partner can determine if there is a genuine need for this to be implemented.

Thanks ... Steve

It's an interesting question, Steve. I've seen errors in every picture I've submitted. There must be many pros and cons for editing but, having thought about it often, this is my take on it:

Would we ever finish the job or would we go back time and again to keep tweaking, until the original picture no longer resembled the one we got the votes for? Would we drive our generous hosts up the wall while we played about with our old drawings?

The 'old masters' (Van Gough in particular) often produced several versions of the same subject, rather than mess about with the original ... with pleasing results. Don't misunderstand me when I say I want to do another of Luciano Pavarotti ... I know I'm not a great artist and never will be. However, I've never been satisfied with my drawing of him. Having found another interesting photo of the Maestro, I would much rather have another go and still have the original to compare it with, if only to prove to myself that I'm getting better at this game.

It will be interesting to see other responses to this valid question.

We have a "Save Draft" and that allows us to tweak our pics for as long as we wish... and then submit when we are "done"... I agree with Login. I am never satisfied & would go mad "fixing" my pics... I prefer the new creation...

I guess as long as you keep the draft version and make the amendments until you are happy...If you are like me...You are never happy, what looks perfect to you 5 minutes later is defective, small discrepancies seem to only show up after posting. Who knows maybe the errors are what makes some pictures charming, it was just a thought, I am realising just how impulsive I can be lol

Steve, you gave me my first ever comment on my vase of flowers and welcomed me to TD. There have been times I could easily have gone back to that vase and changed it. It would have become a different picture and you might not have wanted to comment on my new version or vote for it. I am glad I have not had the opportunity to change it or you might have had the opportunity to remove your comment.

I have to admit that, like just about every other TDer, as soon as I submit a pic (or a comment), I want to add to or change it.

I have often thought that it would be brilliant if we could keep the 'pre-submitted' pic in a personal library, and then work on it at leisure, but I think we all know that that's just not how it works

I guess, in the old days, you never got the chance to redo / touch-up your latest portrait of the local magnifico once you'd handed it over, either.

It's the way it is - there's a 'submit' button, and then you confirm that you're ready to submit.. and voila ! .. actually, I'm trying to think of instances in real life when you can change things once you've published them (outside of wishlist stuff) ?

Toulose latrec used to go into the louvre and futz with his paintings:). But knowing you cannot change after submission probably lends some artistic discipline.

It has all been said about tweaking a picture. What I wish for is the ability to save more than one draft per them. Wouldn't that be great?

oh wow... hadn't heard that about Lautrec... hilarious!
DaVinci kept the Mona Lisa with him until his death, tinkering, tinkering...
(They say she had delicate eyelashes and eyebrows until someone cleaned the painting a bit too assiduously, removing a layer or two of the color glazing instead of just the protective surface varnish.)

For the record, there's not a single major picture I've done here that I wouldn't have tweaked a bit about 2 minutes after I submitted it. Oddly, a few weeks later I can seldom remember (or find) the part that loomed so awkwardly. I think five's got it exactly -- "artistic discipline" -- we need it. I do anyway!

In a couple instances, I HAVE saved the finished image on my hard drive and made a couple of changes in PaintShopPro so they could be printed and given as gifts.

And sure, I'd love to be able to save multiple drafts in each theme, but that's such an invitation to obsessing more than I already do, not to mention being a headache-y kluge for TD staff to program.

I can't add anithing - just can say that this feature could drive me mad, letting the ossessive-compulsive that sleep in me to fully wake up!

I admit there was many times I would have had the chance to redo a pic: sometime I submit just for detecting some big mistake after submission: the typical unintentional "dropping" of a piece, and a couple of times I misframed the canvas and had the top edge with empty spaces...

this is the way they work. artistic discipline! And there are times My finger is forced to click the submit button, just to stop the obsession of perfection... Bless this button!

Haa~haa Clo...

There have been soooooo many times I have hovered over that submit button & fought within myself about clicking it... It is often a struggle followed by relief when I click it... Followed of course by anticipation of the response I might receive from others...

...It is quite a powerful button is it not...

I think it would be great! Other drawing sites allow it, and when you have worked on it you can either delete the original or leave it and have both versions to reference (also an option wether to display a pic in the gallery--had to sneak that one in too=P). Discipline ehh...for me it is enough that we layer them edge by edge, piece by piece.
It works well the way it is though and I'm still really appreciating the 'save draft' and 'repeat' buttons.

oh now wait...! if you put it THAT way (polly's), I'd be sooo all for it! Imagine being able to back up a bit, rebuild... AND KEEP BOTH versions.... This is substantially different from starting an image all over again from scratch; the whole mindset is different (well it is for me, anyway).

LOL.. it sounds to you like a nice idea, but I really DON'T think that we want it in practice.

Last time we had the ability to copy a draft, and publish a sequence of pics based on the same picture, everyone just went mad producing hundreds of drawings all slightly different - ThinkDraw very quickly (and in retrospect kindly) corrected the bug that allowed this to happen.

Sometimes I think it would be nice to be able to have multiple drafts in one medium, but being restricted to one means that you HAVE to press the submit button sooner or later (or delete it) - and you can create a second picture anytime you want to, as long as you don't want to save it as a draft.

I'll go with matthew and say that the torture & relief of making a final 'submit' decision, is the best way
