Well, everything's moving along nicely on our house building. They have yet to dig the hole but we have gotten very close to that stage. It also looks like we're going to be able to have a walk out basement, which is sweet! We are having a little bit of difficultly finding a place for the garage to go because it can't be built over the utility lines which run right through the only spot a garage would fit. We could move it over to the other side of the yard but the property line does a funny little jog along the back alley so we have to get permission from the city to build it there. It seems we could actually build it over the utility lines but if we do we have to sign something for the city which says if they need to dig there we'll move the garage. So that side is out.

Baldur has been watching the Showtime series 'The Tudors' on DVD for the past several years. I have been rationing them out very slowly as the program came to an end after only 4 seasons.
Sadly the only episode left to watch is the finale. It is the end of an era.

I had hoped that the series would continue all the way through the reign of Queen Elizabeth, but alas it is not to be.

My mom loved that show, she said the only problem she had with it was that at the end of King Henry's life he was grossly fat and quite disgusting by all accounts and she had a hard time seeing Jonathan Rhys Myers as a fat, crippled old reprobate. I'd love to see the series though, I think both my sweetie and I would enjoy it.

hmmm... a garage can be "built" on rollers if you use a cargo container... they generally come 8x8x20 or 8x8x40... and are pretty easily modified along the sides with windows, doors, sliding/lifting/pop-out... as well as insulated and given beefed up security.... ;>

hehehe, if we were building a garage that small we wouldn't have a problem. Might be hard to fit 2 cars and a worktable in there. I would love to see that though.

Re: Dragon's garage problem

How about a carport instead - you could then install without foundations with, say paving stones or gravel for the two cars (which could easily be moved for the buried utilities) and even removable fencing panels for the sides if needed. Perhaps a separate small shed for the worktable?? ... just a thought ...

We had thought of possibly building a 1 car garage with a carport beside it. We're hoping the the builder can get the ok from the city to simply put the garage on the other side of the yard from the utilities line. The problem is the City of Red Deer says that a garage must be either 1 meter back from the property line or 6 meters back. 6 meters back is in the middle of the house so it has to be 1 meter. However the back edge of the property line isn't straight, it has a funny little jog to it which means if we line it up on the shorter side the garage will be less than 1 meter from the property line where it has the jog. If we line it up on the long side where it fits perfectly it covers the utilities line. We've got our fingers croosed that the builder can talk them into the exception. Then we can do what we wanted from the start.
Honestly though, we'll just be so happy to be in a house and out of our condo.

oooh I love Brunnhilde's idea -- removable panels and pavers! Good luck either way, Dragon... and of course, let us know, eh. ;>

Have to share a STOP sign moment en route home just now from my twice-yearly visit to a mall store clearance - pulled up behind an SUV with a license plate that goes right to the top of my favorites: K SYRAH.

Don't you wish you could get to know the people?
