Here's an interesting take on the 12 Days of Christmas, Irish fashion.

I always thought the "true love" kept repeating the gifts - so on the 4th day it was 4 calling birds PLUS 3 French hens PLUS 2 turtle doves PLUS another partridge. Some wag always publishes the approximate cost in terms of this year's economy. By my assumption that was 352 "gifts.''

Even if that's not the case, the recipient ends up with 13 birds and 50 people, plus an assumed 8 cows or goats. Five golden rings scarcely makes up for it all.

Normal, that cracked me up. Have always thought the "true love" in that song had a horrible sense of gift-giving! And your comment about the five rings not making up for it all! LOL, and then some. : )

... wondering what Baldur is planning for his Christmas dinner(s)? Marius's nieces and their children are coming to town and their mother is quite brilliant in planning meals: she assigns everyone a night to cook. One night the vegetarian is cooking (It will be vegetables for all that night.), another night someone is making Mexican, another night Pizza for the grand-kid birthday party, another night we'll be eating something Greek/Mediterranean, one night will be catered, and on the last night the kids (ages six to fifteen) will make dinner. Last year it was spaghetti and salad with Rice Krispie treats for dessert. Not sure what it will be this year but the kids feel very important to have their own night in the kitchen. Of course, they aren't so great at the clean-up part but no one ever seems to mind that. : )

Christmas Eve my daughter, Ashleigh and my exwife will be here for dinner.
Afterwards we exchange gifts.
The menu will be a combination of things that my daughter looks forward to each year, not necessarily a logical or even a vegetarian menu.
We will be serving:
deviled eggs
Potato kugel with sour cream
Applesauce
Fried crab cakes with tartar sauce
Steamed broccoli
Christmas cookies

Christmas Day Baldur will just be cooking for himself and Robert.

Breakfast is pancakes, somehow I think it's a law somewhere that you must eat pancakes on Christmas morning.

For Christmas dinner I will be serving:
Green Salad with a creamy horseradish dressing
Filet Mignon baked in pastry (for Robert)
Red beans and rice (vegetarian style)
Beet salad with fresh orange sections
and no dessert

Robert just does not eat dessert. I will have Christmas cookies on hand naturally and if anyone drops in tea and cookies will be served.

Incidentally, this is the first Christmas at Boughbreak that Baldur did not put up a Christmas tree.
The kittens are just too destructive at this age, the whole exercise would be futile and a complete disaster.
I did hang a few ornaments on my 18" tall potted Norfolk Island pine, but we must assume that the beasties will get their paws on every last one.

There is a lovely kissing ball hanging in the foyer and delightful homemade evergreen garland (holly and white pine) draped over the front door.
It looks great from the road.
We also have electric candle lamps in the front windows.

Baldur is looking for a safe place to hang Vera's homemade crystal beaded snowflake ornaments. They may end up on the foyer chandelier.

Thanks, Baldur, for sharing your Holiday cooking/baking plans. Sounds wonderful. Hope you don't miss that Christmas tree too much but then ... what a thoughtful caretaker of kittens you are! And ... what is a kissing ball? Assuming it must have mistletoe on it? ??

Meant to say, Dragon, I like your cat quote too. And now, hoping Dragon will not mind this ... but ... marius is almost completely convinced that a cat without one of Dragon's home-made cat toys is a cat deprived. Our cats think these toys are the absolute best and play with them pretty much *every single day* ... for months now. [marius wonders if Dragon uses something *besides* catnip and alpaca fur because the cats are positively pixilated with these toys.]

What has got me onto this topic is the new toys we ordered for Christmas. (Yes, our cats get Christmas gifts, which of course are opened quite early.) Well, I woke up the other morning with the Christmas Stocking toy in our bed and the moose toy stuffed part way under the hall rug. There was some serious playing going on for those toys to have gotten that far away from their usual play-space.

Oh well, may as well relate the rest of the story now that I've gotten started. On the day the toys arrived, I had somewhere to go and was running late. So, I snipped off the end of the envelope and peeked inside. Ten darling creations and so much fun it would be to decide who will get which toy but alas, I had to leave. When I got home later that day, spouse had some funny photos for me. It seems that our Puck *knew* there were delights in that envelope because he knocked it off the TV-tray, tried to crawl into the envelope (and made it about half-way in) and then he pulled ALL of the toys out and began to play with them while they were still in their individual plastic sacks. Yes, marius had to tell the recipients of cat toy gifts that the toys had been 'field tested' and approved by our dear Puck. : )

[And, Dragon, don't blame me if you get too many orders for cat toys now. And, please don't forget I'll need ten more in the spring sometime.]

Our tradition for Christmas morning breakfast is Eggs Benedict. It's been many years since my step-dad has made them for us (their house has been under going major renovations for about the last 5 years so no big family Christmas there) he made the absolute finest Eggs bene I've ever had. It was the hollandaise sauce, he makes it from scratch and it has a sinful amount of butter in it but, of course, there are no calories on Christmas, so none of us care.
Our own Eggs bene are not nearly as wonderful. We use a packaged hollandaise mix as neither of us have a clue how to make it from scratch. We do always enjoy them though.

Steve Martin: If I had one wish that I could wish this holiday season, it would be that all the children to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace.
If I had two wishes I could make this holiday season, the first would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing in the spirit of harmony and peace. And the second would be for 30 million dollars a month to be given to me, tax-free in a Swiss bank account.
You know, if I had three wishes I could make this holiday season, the first, of course, would be for all the children of the world to get together and sing, the second would be for the 30 million dollars every month to me, and the third would be for encompassing power over every living being in the entire universe.
And if I had four wishes that I could make this holiday season, the first would be the crap about the kids definitely, the second would be for the 30 million, the third would be for all the power, and the fourth would be to set aside one month each year to have an extended 31-day orgasm, to be brought out slowly by Rosanna Arquette and that model Paulina-somebody, I can't think of her name. Of course my lovely wife can come too and she's behind me one hundred percent here, I guarantee it.
Wait a minute, maybe the sex thing should be the first wish, so if I made that the first wish, because it could all go boom tomorrow, then what do you got, y'know? No, no, the kids, the kids singing would be great, that would be nice.
But wait a minute, who am I kidding? They're not going to be able to get all those kids together. I mean, the logistics of the thing is impossible, more trouble than it's worth! So -- we reorganize!
Here we go. First, the sex thing. We go with that. Second, the money. No, we got with the power second, then the money. And then the kids. Oh wait, oh jeez, I forgot about revenge against my enemies! Okay, I need revenge against all my enemies, they should die like pigs in hell! That would be my fourth wish.
And, of course, my fifth wish would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace.
Thank you everybody and Merry Christmas.
