Do you remember the groups Echo and the Bunnymen and Siouxie and the Banshees? They may not have been your thing. But I liked them as well!

I do remember them but they were never among my favorites.
How about Thomas Dolby? Culture Club? Dexy's Midnight Runners?
Modern English?
Loved their one super hit 'I melt with you'

I also loved KISS and Van Halen! KISS was the very first concert I got to go to with friends I was 13 years old, right on the front row. Ace Frehley....who I loved.....tossed me his guitar pick. I still have it!LOL
I have to admit my first ever concert experience was "The King". My mom took me to see him in concert in Huntsville, she loved him (me to). Elvis and I share the same birthday.lol

Dragon

Very fond memory of my youth, sitting in a Harvey's eating burgers with my dad when he asked me who this band INXS was, only instead of pronouncing it In Excess he pronounced it to rhyme with minxes.

Dragon's very first concert ever was John Cougar Mellancamp. Yes I know it's just John Mellancamp but this was back when he still had the Cougar! I was in grade 6 at the time. The next concert I saw after that was Colin James with Craig Northy. That was about 2 years ago. (It was an absolutely fantastic show btw). So I only went about 20 years between concerts, hehehe.
We saw The Arrogant Worms last year and the next time they come through town we'll definitly see them again. They truly know how to entertain!

Belladonnis, I am still laughing at the name of your team. Maybe one would have to be a nurse to know this, but the name of the prep a gastroenterologist gives you to take before a colonoscopy is GoLytely! I just picture you guys abusing laxatives to lose your weight. LMAO! (Sorry, I hope you know I'm just chuckling WITH you, not AT you!) And by the way, I graduated in '83, too!

As far as music, right along with B52's style, (who I happen to LOOOOVE) I really enjoy a band from farther north in Dragonland. I just love Barenaked Ladies. Great music, and tongue in cheek humor. What better mix could you get?

Hey Dragon I remember when John was Cougar and Prince was Prince! I have to say I couldnt tell you how many concerts I've been to. I know my favorites....Meatloaf, Billy Joel, Hall and Oates, Prince, Garth Brooks and yes AC DC.

Omg! How funny Robin! I should have checked here first!lol
Are you still having your goose problem? I ask Craig one of our environmental engineers about the sound system they put up at work with the bird in distress sounds. He said that was the best defense against bird problems he wasnt so sure about geese but it keeps even them out of the no poop areas at work. He said if you could find a cd you could put a player on your porch and it might work.

I'm off to bed. Hope everyone has a good evening!

Thanks, Belladonnis. I have to report, no geese today at all!!!! I don't know why, but there were no breakfast, lunch OR dinner breaks here. A friend of mine came by while I wasn't home and delivered her old mattress to me for my son. (We're getting rid of the twin loft bed for a "big boy" bed), and she left the mattress, then texted me "Nice goose poop by the way! HOLY COW!!" Cracked me up, but then again, it didn't.

just a couple quick comments re at least a couple pages ago (my, you folks move fast when I go out for one evening!)--

brussels sprouts -- have always tasted mysteriously like fresh corn to me... so it never occurred to me to try adding balsamic, but I definitely will now

violets -- you can buy charming little boxes of them, candied, at Fortnum & Masons, but you're right, the sugar overpowers the flowers. BUT... gather enough of them and you can make one of the world's most glorious jellies! Filter it properly as you would for any jelly, and the jars are like amethysts.
You can tinker with the pH to adjust the color from deepest purple to a delicate rose hue. Flavor is hard to describe but perfume-like.

There are recipes all over the 'net, (a far cry from the early 90's when the only one I could find was in a copy of "Victorian" magazine).

This website has some particularly nifty photos --

While I'm going on about colorful jellies, may I recommend Pyracantha (Firethorn). Its tiny berries make the most amazing deep orange jelly, again jewel clear, a perfect complement to the Violet.

Flavor's apple-like.

Its rare to find it, perhaps because so many people think the berries are poisonous. The berry flesh is not, tho' I wouldn't eat the seeds, simply because they're so closely related to apples, but birds do eat the seeds with no apparent ill effects.

My mom and one of my aunts made pyracantha jelly every year, and they told a story about why people believe the berries are toxic --

...seems one finds a fair number of dead birds under the bushes in the winter. At first glance then, one would blame the berries. But it turns out that the berries after a frost get extra ripe and ferment. Birds gorging on these get a bit tipsy and don't evade the opportunistic cats so well!

Anyway, our bushes were enormous and prolific, we had a lot of pyracantha jelly every year, ate every bit of it joyously... and we all survived with only a slight twitch and occasional hiccup... ;>

Sheftali, I certainly enjoy Dr.Bear's assistance with my goose problem. Seems with all of the advice I've gotten over the past several days (on Channel Baldur AND on Facebook) Dr. Bear's sign ended up working the best. The geese haven't been seen since day before yesterday!

And Qsilv, I had 2 large pyracantha shrubs at my old house. One was under my bedroom window and we pulled it not long after moving in. The other one was at the fence in the back yard. It blocked the dog's view to the front yard, so I left it there. Kept down the occasional barking at the passers-by. But trimming that monster was daunting! I would end up with scratches all over from those thorns. It certainly did attract birds, though. I never delved underneath the vicious thing to look for dead drunk birds and am thinking my cats would not have chanced the mortals wounds from those thorns just to eat a drunk bird. LOL

Now had I known I could make jelly from the berries, well, I still wouldn't have. How does one pick the berries without bleeding??

And regarding violet flavor, I recall chewing violet gum as a child and, just like you described, it was very perfumey tasting. I didn't like it one bit. Don't know if real violets taste like that gum, but I guess I have a sort of aversion to them now, anyway. At least in a culinary sense.

I never thought Pyracantha might be edible, that is amazing.
Also it surprises me that one can get violet petals to color a jelly.
Years ago Baldur painstakingly sugared and dried violet petals. It was all very interesting but too much bother to ever try again.

Rose hips are fun to nibble on while working in the garden. We have a wild type of rose that produces hundreds of tiny bright red hips each summer.

Well Baldur is headed back to the kitchen to bake some biscotti and perhaps start some bread dough.
I really should bake bread today, we'll see.
The last batch of biscotti was almond flavoured and was excellent. This time I'm thinking of combining orange extract with ground cloves.
I do not have any nuts in the pantry at the moment and don't care to travel out to the market in this frigid weather. Hence the biscotti will be plain.
