On Baldur's odd vegetable habits.....
He grows
Rhubarb
Okra
Turnips
every manner of Squash
perennial Green Onions
Peas (really who grows peas nowadays?)
He has tried to grow Artichokes as well

Baldur also picks wild mushrooms in the woods occasionally that scare me to death.
He finds weeds in the garden and on the roadside to add to salads,
Especially Dandelions.

I've seen him eat Dandelion leaves in salads as well as cook them with garlic and olive oil to serve over pasta.

Mercy!

Beyond that he has gorgeous quince bushes that are covered in deep coral colored flowers every Spring. The have nasty 2" thorns and eventually very hard, mishapen applelike fruit.
He will actually harvest these demon-apples and make a very nice jam out of them. There are never many but he always gets at least 4 pints of a dark brown sticky preserve out of them
It smells like apples and spices but having watched him make it several times the only ingredients are quince, sugar and a small amount of water.

Dragon

Dragon loves Rhubarb, Turnips and every manner of Squash. I have not tried Okra so I'm not sure if I like it (strangely every time I hear it I want to call it Okra Winfrey). I think fresh garden peas might be the best thing ever invented and am very fond of artichokes as well. About the only thing in that batch don't care for is the green onions but I don't hate them and will put up with them easily. I think they are the only member of the onion family that I don't absolutly love.

My mom and step-dad got married on Vancouver island in the town of Sooke (that should be pronounced to rhyme with Book). They stayed at a beautiful inn on the coast called The Sooke Harbour House. The room they had over looked a wonderful little garden with a few herbs and quite a few flowers. They would frequently see the chef run into the garden to harvest both herbs and flowers. The meals were very beautiful and always had fresh flowers right on the plate, these were indeed part of the meal and intended to be eaten. They said they were amazed at how they complimented the meal and would not have thought of it before.

Some flowers are quite delicious, I happen to like nasturtiums.
Of course make sure the blossoms have not been sprayed with any sort of pesticide before eating it.

A friend of mine decorated her wedding cake with sugared violet petals. The cake was beautiful but I couldnt really tell what the actual violet petal tasted like.
Ive had pansies in salad before and what I remember they were slightly sweet and green tasting.....if that makes sense.
What do nasturtiums taste like?

Dragon I love squash as well but I also love okra. Stewed with tomatoes or alone, fried or pickled they are very good.
Ive never tried Rhubard, are they sweet, salty or bland in flavor.
Something that I had never tried untill my daughter Ash asked to have them for dinner one night was brussel sprouts. I love their strong flavor.

Nasturtiums taste peppery, almost like watercress multiplied.
Rhubarb is very sour, it needs sugar to mellow it out.
Brussel sprouts are my favorite. I've been cooking them in a mixture of balsamic vinegar and chopped garlic until the vinegar is all but evaporated.
The combination is pure heaven

I've got to start eating more veggies and taking the fat out of what I eat. A group of us at work entered the Scale Back Alabama program. Its a 10
week program. The goal is for your team to lose 10 pounds in that period of time. I am the team captain and our team name is "The GoLitelys".
Help cheer me on to victory!

My recipe for brussels sprouts was already put up on the 'favorite recipes' thread. It is comment #138.

The balsamic vinegar sounds delicious! I love vinegar, especially the flavored vinegars. My favorite is a garlic vinegar. Great on salads and marinating chicken for grilling.
In Athens Ala where I am originally from there is a little BBQ place that soaks there meat in vinegar while they smoke it in the pits. They shread the meat after it is done and it has the BEST taste....just a hint of vinegar!

Athens, Georgia is a swingin' place. That town blessed the world with the B52s.
I cannot say enough about them, my children were probably the only toddlers on Earth who knew the obvious reply to:
'What's that on your head?'
My daughter loved it when Baldur showed her how you were supposed to get down on the floor during 'Rock Lobster' and squirm on your back.

Now see I want to go listen to 'Mesopotamia'

But you said Athens, Alabama.
Never mind

Here for our Missouriless Musical Moment is the classic song by the B52s:

'Mesopotamia'

Turn your watch, turn your watch back,
about a hundred thousand years.
A hundred thousand years.

I'll meet you by the third pyramid
Ah come on, that's what I want, we'll meet
in Mesopotamia. oh oh oh

(We're goin' down to meet) I ain't no student,
(Feel those vibrations) of ancient culture
(I know a neat excavation) Before I talk
I should read a book.
But there's one thing I do know,
There's a lot of ruins in Mesopotamia.

Six or eight thousand years ago
They laid down the law. Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haa

Another classic song of their's

'Wig'

What's that on your head?
A wig
Wig. Wig. Wig

Sally's gotta wig
Ricky's gotta wig
Baby's gotta wig
Kate's gotta wig
Fred's gotta cheap toupee
Keith's gotta big bouffant on
We all got wigs, so... Let's go!

On the neon, neon side of town
On the neon, neon side of town

Julia's gotta wig
Phyllis has a wig
Cindy's gotta wig
J.T's gotta wig
Carol's fall fell
Bubba's gotta big bouffant on
We all got wigs, so... Let's go!

On the neon, neon side of town
On the neon, neon side of town

On the neon, neon side of town
On the neon, neon side of town

What's that on you head?
A wig
Wig. Wig. Wig

Wigs on fire! Wigs on fire! Wigs on... Fire!
It's 2525 and we've got the most wigs alive!

Wigs on fire! Wigs on fire! Take it... Higher!
It's 2525 and we've got the hottest dos alive!

Well here's a contribution to these loverly songfest.
A song by Jule Styne and Leo Robin, immortalized by Marilyn Monroe in 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'

"Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend'

The French are glad to die for love.
They delight in fighting duels.
But I prefer a man who lives
And gives expensive jewels.
A kiss on the hand
May be quite continental,
But diamonds are a girl's best friend.

A kiss may be grand
But it won't pay the rental
On your humble flat
Or help you at the automat.

Men grow cold
As girls grow old,
And we all lose our charms in the end.

But square-cut or pear-shaped,
These rocks don't loose their shape.
Diamonds are a girl's best friend.

Tiffany's!
Cartier!
Black Starr!
Frost Gorham!
Talk to me Harry Winston.
Tell me all about it!

There may come a time
When a lass needs a lawyer,
But diamonds are a girl's best friend.

There may come a time
When a hard-boiled employer
Thinks you're awful nice,
But get that ice or else no dice.

He's your guy
When stocks are high,
But beware when they start to descend.

It's then that those louses
Go back to their spouses.
Diamonds are a girl's best friend.

I've heard of affairs
That are strictly platonic,
But diamonds are a girl's best friend.

And I think affairs
That you must keep liaisonic
Are better bets
If little pets get big baguettes.

Time rolls on,
And youth is gone,
And you can't straighten up when you bend.

But stiff back
Or stiff knees,
You stand straight at Tiffany's.

Diamonds! Diamonds!
I don't mean rhinestones!
But diamonds are a girl's best friend.
