Ok - heres mine...

Untitled.

She leaves her home and sees a little white toad jump into the tall grass along the path.

She likes to get there early, before anyone else.
When the air is still cool and the sun is just peeking over the clouds.
The water is calmer at this time of day.
Its fury hasn’t been stirred by boats or the earths magnetic pull yet.
The white sand is clean like a new piece of parchment.
She looks out over the majestic blue and sees him.
The dolphin is always waiting for her.
He is quite the rascal pretending to be aloof yet he loves to play and loves her attention even more.
She knows him by the scar along his left side.
She imagines it is from an irresponsible spear.
The scar looks like a puncture and then his skin looks sliced.
Who would try to harm a beautiful creature like this she thinks to herself? This random thought often comes to her throughout her day, and she wishes something horrible on them like a toothache or something just as painful.
As she softly speaks to him, he swims closer to the shore.
Henceforth they have a truly wonderfiul friendship.

200 words, I counted...

Hey, DMarcella.. I'm totally serious - I honestly thought your contribution was excellent.

I've read masses and masses of books since I was a little kid, so my vocab is pretty good - and I've worked in all sorts of places - but the way you drew that picture, I could see the toad in front of me as I was wandering down the road.

You don't need clever words - you've got the ability to show people what you see, regardless (but knowing more words does make it easier to express yourself, and reading a lot means your grammar tends to be better). Good luck and thanks for your story - I loved it, and I'm sure everyone else will too !

I'm going to bed.. mebu27, your piece was just the final blow..

I can imagine these being the lyrics to a really beautiful song, and if the worse you ever wish on someone is a toothache, I can quite see why dolphins would love you, too !

Ron.. my thanks, this has been a great idea !

DMarcella

Thanks Marg. I read a lot, it is just that I don't have a good memory so the new words don't stick. I have a list of books to read ahead of me though so this should help with my writing; I'm always working on it so I'm glad I got good enough that someone thinks what I wrote was even good. Thanks again you gave hope that I am getting better and that makes me want to continue working on it that much more.

Spelling is another difficulty for me.

DMarcella spelling is a challenge for me too. Plus the fact I'm hasty and don't proofread very often, plus my stupid long nails tend to push random keys while typing. I love these stories and I forgot how much I love this type of challenge.

Henceforth , I plan to be less irresponsible, less a spendthrift, less a rascal, less aloof; perhaps even less focused on this fantastic quest to skewer both a white toad and a blue dolphin with one random flight of an driftwood spear as the mage suggested to cure this persisting toothache.

My unholy troubles began unseen, stealthily, like a veiled thief creeping into my ordered life, intent on ripping from my world all that was reasonable, sane, sheltering, or consoling; only to replace those comforts with uncertainty, angst, fear, exposure and intolerable pain of the likes that I'd never encountered before.

Here on a remote granite strewn island in the Seychelles, a paradise both barren in it's otherworldly way yet lush in it's diversity of fauna the one thing I could not expect to find hidden among the crags of my temporary home would be a dental surgeon, my one need.

My mistake was to flee the scientific community, bursting with bombastic creatures like myself to live in this primeval place where indeed my exotic fantasies of discovery, enlightenment, physical pleasures and peace have eluded me, leaving in their stead a fool's errand with perhaps the perfect fool to pursue it.

Don’t call me a rascal, and I won’t call you aloof.
Sometimes I love you,
Even though I find you reckless and irresponsible.
I wish I could let it all go,
And be free like a dolphin.
But the white toad holds me hostage,
And I fear I will never escape him.

Just yesterday, a random toothache caused me to cry out in pain,
And you laughed.
The white toad threw a spear,
And blood flew from your chest.

Don’t call me a rascal, and I won’t call you aloof.
Sometimes I love you,
Even though I find you reckless and irresponsible.
I wish I could let it all go,
And be free like a dolphin.
But the white toad holds me hostage,
And I fear I will never escape him.

Now here we are today,
Healed but still held prisoner,
Not sure if we’re in love.

The spear that pierced your heart lies broken on the floor,
We’ve escaped the white toad,
But not the chains.
Band-aids can’t mend chest wounds,
And scissors can’t bring freedom.

Now here we are today,
Healed but still held prisoner,
Not sure if we’re in love.
Or if we even want to be.

White Toad

An irresponsible, aloof frog ruled the pond, endlessly feasting on the juiciest dragonflies.

The toads whispered, sharing random plots to overthrow the insufferable rascal and claim the fatter, tastier flies for themselves. Plots were only plots. The toads were content with complaining.

“There are less and less dragonflies left to eat. The frog is eating skinnier and smaller ones.”

“He ate up all the big ones.”

The frog issued an edict: “Henceforth, no toad shall eat any dragonflies.”

Now the toads really plotted. But who would lead the revolt? All seemed lost.

A giant wave swept through the pond. “Dolphin!” a toad yelled. Not a dolphin.

A massive toad rose from the water and shook algae from his back. He was albino, so white the sun flashed off him, and the others bowed down. They had a leader: the White Toad, holding a golden spear.

The White Toad wrapped the spear with skinny dragonflies until it looked fat and juicy. He launched the spear.

The frog immediately snatched the juicy fly. The hard spear inside caused a great toothache, and the frog never wanted to eat another dragonfly.

After that, the toads complained about juicy dragonflies.

Dragon

This is my favorite creative writing activity. Thank's Ron for starting this thread!!
Anyways, here's my contribution - exactly 200 words.

He stood looking out at her on the balcony. One who didn't know her would think her aloof, but he knew how warm she could be. He wondered what her blind eyes saw as she stood staring across the desert, her body as long and slender as a spear, as graceful as a dolphin at a fast ships bow.
Sensing his eyes she turned to him.
"He spoke in my dreams," she said, "I must take you to Him."
It seemed so random, but he knew that henceforth everything would change.
"Does this mean I'll be freed?" He asked for what seemed the thousandth time. He knew it irresponsible to ask, but he couldn't stop himself, like poking at a toothache.
"I can't answer that, the council thinks you a bit of a rascal. But this meeting may turn them."
She walked to the door and waited expectantly. Suddenly he was so nervous he could not move, he felt like a white toad buried in cold mud. This meeting would change his life irrevocably and a thought occured to him that he never thought possible. Maybe he didn't want things to change. Maybe, just maybe, he didn't want his freedom.

As if we didn't already know it from the drawings, but there are some seriously talented people here at thinkdraw! I've loved reading all the replies here.

Wow folks. I mean Wow!

I'm still not home and am on my Dad's computer. I've skimmed the whole thread and am amazed. Who knew? Well - on reflection - I guess it's obvious. Some talented and engaged folks about this place.

Someone Suggested a monthly thread. It could be a Mugdots-type challenge (No! No winners here...)

Just like TD get's to pick the themes and elements I think I might reserve the right to pick the word-list each month and set the length.

Comments welcome...

Loved your word list for this one. Challenging, but interesting words (without being too abstract). I had a hard time finding a place for Henceforth and White Toad. Made me make choices I wouldn't normally have, but I love the way my story turned out.

I'm enjoying this thread more than any others so far.
I especially loved Dmarcella's and Five's contribution, but I love them all.
This is really making it hard to concentrate on work, good thing it's a slow day! Hee hee.

I suggested a monthly story. Thought everyone would like that? We'd have to choose a date and duration for that month? No themes? Just words? Correct? You launched the idea so I think it's your baby to get it started, right?

58. 1 Apr 2009 13:46

Dragon

That sounds like fun kmkagle. I'd participate.

Thanks Dragon, my favorites are, yours, five's, and mine. I didn't have to think much to write my story. It just flowed for me but I'm sure that will not always be the case when we have others like this to tackle. I found having words to start with so helpful which surprised me I'd would of thought it would of been harder instead.

I'm waiting for Ron's input since he instigated this. Is that ok?
