This may be terribly stereotypical but I've found that gay men take better care of their dogs than pretty much anyone else. I believe it is felt that their pets are like children in a very real sense.

Of course Baldur went to the ridiculously expensive antique store and visited with the arts & crafts style bronze candlesticks. THese have been there for perhaps 5 years and are lovely. He is asking $300 for the pair.
I imagine they will reside in that shop for some time.
They are wonderful and would be perfect at Chez Baldur but never at that price. If they were $200 for the pair Baldur would still consider them too expensive.
Someday I will find a pair in a thrift shop.

It is quite possible that I have contracted Paw in Mouth disorder from spending entirely too much time in the company of canines. I do hope I did not offend.

As for $3000.00 for candlesticks, I'm with you. That's a bit steep for me. Though if I really liked them and could possibly afford it I would likely spend the $200.00 if they came down that much.

I haven't been antiquing or even thrift store hopping in ages. Yes hopping, like bar hopping only usually less drunk.

Usually.

Did the dogs look like Shepherds or like black, white and rust Saint Bernards?

The Shepherd looking ones would be the Burmese from Burma (Myanmar), the other, the Bernese from Switzerland.

I had to look this up. I've heard tell of both breeds but until you mentioned it didn't make the connection of two separate breeds. They are really quite different.

Nothing like a shepherd at all, these were the Bernese.
The colors, the long wavy hair, it's them.

Goodnight everyone, and thank you all for the odd homecoming.

Baldur, i was browsing back in my old pics in my gallery tonight and got to thinking about that whole Dr.Bear series. It was so fun...it's what got me addicted to thinkdraw in the first place, with you and Tim42. If only we had the forum back then. We could have put the whole story in order on it's own forum, instead of having to flip-flop between everyone's contributions. Alas...

And what ever happened to Tim42 anyway, and also anotheronnism??

Baldur

Well there is a handmade forum back in Tim's drawings detailing everything.
It is close to being up-to-date too.
He left when he lost his internet connection and was intending to return, but alas never did.

Baldur left Dr Bear hanging, He is waiting in Ursula's living room while she changes for their date. Luckily there is a tray of gruyere and biscuits for him to eat, he surely would have withered away by now,
Gummi bears can survive on the tiniest amount of food.

I was not aware that Ron had gone missing. For the longest time he was holed up in 'Thinkwrite', his brainchild. Baldur thought he was living there still.

Ron made a brief appearance in ThinkWrite XVII #10 - 20 August 2009:

"Folks... I have NOT resigned. Sorry for not posting or participating lately. But my internet issues have now escalated to a fight with the neighbor who I shared signal with and an outright battle with the cable company that had previously provided me service.

So I have no service at home and find it difficult at best to write or draw when using other people's computers. So I am semi-retired for a while.

Please keep ThinkWrite alive. It's my favorite thing on the entire internet. I will contribute again regularly when I get this all settled or whenever FiOS comes to my neighborhood.

Much love,
Ron"

He also 'swung by' on 17 October and doodled on Think Draw but I haven't seen him since.

Tim42 (along with several other people) gave me a lot of encouragement when I started drawing here in October 2008. Then in early January he/she also offered to do a 'cross over story' with Dr bear and my little ice-skating chum. I wish I had taken up the offer because I haven't seen him/her since.

solo, I had never heard of the Burmese Mtn Dog, I had no idea it even exsisted. I've have met many Bernese Mtd Dogs who have been referred to as Burmese though. It's a very common misconception. There are, of course, the Burmese cats as well which are not uncommon up here.

I find in pet sitting that I don't sit for many mutts, some of course, but as most pet sitting clients are also rather well off they tend to have purebred animals and rarer ones than most too. I also find that some will use a name for the breed that is less used or even completely wrong. I don't know if this is ignorance or an attempt to set themselves, or at least their pets, apart.

Dragon, perhaps you can help me with this? I have a client who I'm sure told me her dog was an Austrian Shepherd but there seems to be no such animal, there is an Australian Shepherd but the pictures I've seen are not quite right. Stella, the dog in question, looks to me like a German Shepherd if perhaps a little on the small side, a very little. She has the stance, the face and ears, the tail, the coat, even the temperament of a German Shepherd. Am I wrong? I think she's a Shepherd and they were misinformed perhaps?

You can see Stella in my photos on Myspace:

Robin - that was interesting about the deer. Don't think it was taking laps like the reporters said though! : ) Glad it got out unharmed.

Baldur - welcome back! Sounds like you had a good time. Want to know ... do bears pair up with non-bears, or mostly with other bears? And were/are non-bears allowed at the event you attended? Only non-bear type I can think of right now is David Hyde Pierce.

solo, I haven't heard of Austrian Shepard and I couldn't get on your link but it made me think of Belgian Malinois. Here's some info...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_Shepherd_Dog_(Malinois)

We see these on occasion because the RCMP (that's the Mounties for those who don't know) have their dog training kennels not too far from here and we do a lot of work for them. They stick mostly to German Shepards but occasionally go with Malinois as well.

Sorry, if you like you can go to

http://www.myspace.com/solosaterc

and on that page hit the "Photos" button. Stella is in the Coco and Company album.

I'm more and more convinced she is a German Shepherd. I will have to ask Lisa again when I see her, it's possible I somehow misunderstood.

The Maliois look to me very much like Shepherds too, are they all red or do they vary in color?

3678. 2 Nov 2009 16:50

matthew

I agree... Stella is a belgian malinois... The black patch on her back is not the preferred coloring, but they can be dark all over as well... Short or long hair (short is more common) ...
Woody = labradoodle

Solo, some friends of mine had Bernese Mountain Dogs for years. They were indeed beautiful, intelligent, and just joyful animals. Unfortunately, though the dogs were extremely well cared for, their lives were never more than about 8-9 years. After the last one passed on, my friends did not have the heart to own another. I can understand that. My wire-haired dachshund is somewhat rare, as most folks I know have never seen one. But I'm discovering that most folks know what a corgi is, if not the difference between a Pembroke and a Cardigan. Our corgi is a Pembroke, hence no tail. Husband says if we have another corgi, he wants a Cardigan, as he believes all dogs should have tails! I'd love to have a big dog sometime, but have found smaller dogs easier to care for (transport, bathe, etc.)

I had a Blue Labradoodle... Great & happy dog... (and they don't shed hair)
