Baldur breaks bones by being brilliantly buoyant!

If only I had his mind...creative on so many levels.

PS, I think it'd be worth the cost to fly you and Robert out here just to help a sister out for awhile. See if you can find someone to feed the cats while you're gone, ok??

And Marius, I just love every post of yours that I read. I wish we were neighbors so you could drop by for a glass of wine periodically and entertain me while Baldur cooks us a meal! I'm delighted and surprised to find the one and only other living human being who reads the end of the book first, like I do! It makes my friends crazy for some reason. They will go to a movie and I'll ask them how it ends, too. They just refuse to indulge me EVER! I wonder why this bothers people so much. I don't give away endings to others or ruin their fun, so why must they ruin MY fun by NOT giving away endings?! Glad to know that somewhere out there I have a kindred spirit regarding this!

By the way, regarding Baldur breaking bones, what I meant was, my ribs are broken from being doubled over laughing. Baldur, to my knowledge, is not the least bit violent!

Perhaps we should all move out to Rhode Island. Sounds like Chez Baldur has lots of room and plenty of entertainment.

My stepfather is always trying to tell me about movies he's seen and always (ALWAYS) says he won't tell me anything important but then he tells me the whole story, and he's so caught up in it you cannot politely cut in and say "Hey, you're telling me the whole story!"

I've learned to combat this with lots of questions that don't actually pertain to the movie, it gets him all confused, he's like me with the ADD, either terribly focused on something or completely unaware.

It drives me bonkers! Sometimes my mother will catch him and she can stop him without getting anyone upset although I think it embarrasses him. He's very easily upset and very sensitive, lots of anxiety and the nicest man EVER. It upsets me more to upset him than to hear the end of the movie I was planning on seeing.

He has a hard time reading people's faces and body language, not like an Aspy but just oblivious, and he's very empathetic. Even though he doesn't read people well, if he knows they are having trouble or are upset he's always ready to listen and gives really good advice.

But I do try to avoid him for a couple of days after they've gone out to the movies!

Robin, I tend to read long series of books and I wonder what you would do with them. One of the series I've been reading since high school (good God has it really been that long?!) is 16 books strong with at least 1 more on the way despite the author promising that the last book would be the actual LAST book. It also jumps back and forth through several timelines in each book. I think you would have a hard time with reading the end first there. I love it so much I've read it about 20 times, I could just about recite it by now.

I'd like to know how the order was decided because SURELY I deserve Top billing! LOL

Dragon, no way I could read that series. In fact, I read some of the harry potter books, (last page first, of course) but ultimately, as they kept growning in length, I lost interest. I look at 900 page book and just find it too daunting. I might read a hundred pages in one day, then not have an opportunity to pick the book up again for a month. So I like a quicker read. And I can't stand too many characters either. I get them all confused. Especially if their names start with the same letter. Stick a Mike and a Mark and a Matthew in the same book and I'll never keep them straight. I read this book by Jodie Piccoult...My Sister's Keeper...many years ago. It not only jumped from character to character, but from year to year. So one chapter would be a daughter in 1980 and the next chapter would be the mother in 1987 and the next chapter would be the brother in 1975 or something. It made my head hurt.

Oh, I hate it when more than one of the main characters' names start with the same letter, I can't keep them straight at all.

Funny that we don't have that problem itrw, it must have to do with the fact that we can actually see the characters in our own lives and don't rely solely on a name to identify a person.

1914. 28 Aug 2009 09:33

Dragon

Robin, I suggest you never attempt to read any Robert Jordan. If he bothers to name a person in one of his books they will inevitably become a major player later in the series. I started keeping notes to keep track of who was good or evil, dead or come back from the dead (possibly with a different name and gender) and who was where. My note system in itself is completely impossible to decipher unless you have me there to guide you through it.

Baldur

I am glad there are so many bits of reference online. If Baldur is reading Anne Rice or Marion Zimmer Bradley it's impossible to keep every character in every book tucked into my memory.
It's about time to read another bit of Anne Rice, I have been rationing her books or I will have read everything and have nothing left to surprise me.

I advise dropping them all & focus more on reading radio baldur transcripts...

Baldur

Robert and I went out to dinner this evening. We went to a rather busy little restaurant that specializes in seafood and Italian food
Robert had chowder and something that are locally called clamcakes, basically a fritter that contains chopped clams. Baldur doubts that they are called clamcakes anywhere but in Southern New England.
I had a pizza topped with onions and roasted red peppers.
There is but one waitress at this place on Friday nights and her name is Karen.
She is aware that Robert will have a Miller Light (beer) and Baldur will have an iced tea, except during the season of Lent. Robert will not drink beer during Lent, he will drink a Sprite then. Karen always remembers these details.
When she arrives at the table with Baldur's pizza she also brings a shaker full of hot red pepper flakes.
This restaurant is generally crowded. The closest table to ours was occupied by an older couple. There is a nominal 1" gap between the tables. Depending on the circumstances one needs either to pretend the distance is much greater and studiously ignore the other diners or one must engage in a brief bit of polite smalltalk. This other couple was going to follow the smalltalk route.
Having not been there before Claude and Camellia questioned us about the size of the portions of certain items. Camellia was concerned that she might not be able to eat an entire order of Fish & Chips. We helped them as best we could. Then I shocked poor Claude.
When my pizza arrived I removed the lid from my shaker of hot red pepper flakes and dispensed a 'moderate' portion into my hand and then scattered them on my pizza. Certainly there was not more than a teaspoonful of red pepper involved. Claude gasped loudly.
He seemed horrified over the quantity of pepper flakes.
Baldur explained that the pepper flakes are larger than the holes in the shaker. One could shake and shake with nary (+2 points) a flake appearing.
Claude asked if the pepper wasn't 'hot' but of course that is the whole purpose of using them in the first place.
Certainly the pepper flakes drama will become a dinnertime story when they dine with friends.

I always do red pepper flakes on my pizza and I like good blue cheese dressing as well (not a lot, just enough). I totally know what you mean about the holes being smaller than the flakes, you could be there for ever!

I do my salt the same way, put it in the hand and then toss it on the food; you have way more control that way. I’m not huge on salt and generally while eating out don’t need it. Sometimes when at friend’s homes for dinner I’ll use some, not often as I’m usually wishing there were less salt and not more.

Most people feel the need to add salt to food I’ve prepared, I don’t mind and I tell them so they don’t worry about it. Apparently it’s a major faux pas to salt your food. (I know, just try it first. I cannot care if you want to ruin a good meal; its your food, play with it if you wanna’.)

Not only do I do the same as Baldur with red pepper flakes and the same as solosater with salt (unless using your own shaker you just don't know how fast it's gonna come out!) I also take the lid off the pepper shakers at restaraunts and sprinkle directly on my food. I am a great fan of pepper, waiters hate me when they offer fresh ground pepper 'cause they can be standing there grinding for quite some time. I also find the holes on the pepper shakers are just too small.

Loved to hear about Baldur and Robert's thoughtful waitress. Those are the things that really make you want to keep coming back to a restaraunt. Especially that she remembers the change at Lent. That is a sign of a truly good waitress that she files away the little details of her regulars.

Ah - so it is ROBIN who started the alliterations! If we were nieghbors, I would be delighted to stop by for a glass of wine. However ... we could "be as little children" (which I think the Bible advises) and simply pretend we are neighbors, pretend we shared a glass together and have a great ol' time. : ) Hey, we could also rent a movie, look up the ending on the internet (if no one will divulge it) and that might be fun too! I wonder if Chez Baldur makes pizza...home made crust and all?

Happy travels to Sheftali. It's supposed to be fall-like weather in KS for the next week. What a blessing for you!

Baldur, I aobut died when I saw your list as thought it was another puzzle and my brain was not reday for ti.

I read that people who like red pepper flakes are able to like them because their tongues do not have as many hot-spice taste buds as other people. Spouse is in this group and will serve an entree saying he gave it a "little kick." This usually means I will have to pull out the sour cream because it is the only thing I've found that truly kills the burning sensation on the tongue, cheeks, and yes, teeth too! I use about 2-3 of those flakes, and, they are quite delicious.

And Matthew ... "The views expressed here..." very funny!
