Baldur

Baldur just refuses to use the word 'Kong' in this case.

Baldur

It is quite hot andd humid here at Chez Baldur today but we are beginning to get powerful gusts of wind. Hurricane Bill is quite far away still but might be the cause.
There may be some tree limbs dropping if this keeps up.

-d =and.

Despite the heat it was housework day here.
Baldur swept and vacuumed all the floors and washed the kitchen and bathroom floors with a good strong water/ammonia solution.
Oh how Baldur hates ammonia but nothing works as well.
Now everything is squeaky clean.

Ammonia is a fabulous cleaner but be careful. If you ever have trouble with a cat peeing in the house don't use ammonia to clean it up, it mimicks the smell of cat urine and reinforces their desire to pee there.
On windows,however, there's nothing better!

Matthew I liked you from day one, or two, or whenever I learned of you. Of course, my dear brother is named Matthew so perhaps that's it. (tee hee hee - just a little poke in the ribs.)

Maybe you could post answer for your cryptogram? I am WAY behind reading BR, behind on things at home and then there is Robin's cryptogram, and folks are coming tomorrow for the first annual BLT lunch. How will I cope? Please help me and post your answer! Thanks, marius.

Here's how you cope: don't serve BLT's! I hate BLT's! I like B's, though.

Flattery will get you nowhere. I can be as stubborn as a mule sometimes. Here's what you do: serve my recipe for spice bomb tacos.

Baldur

Now Baldur is in the mood for a VBLT.
Why do we always end up back on the topic of food?

Today I cooked about 1/2 pound of lentils until they were just tender, drained them and let them get to room temperature.
to the lentils Baldur added:
Lemon juice
Olive oil
hot pepper flakes
black pepper
shredded fresh basil leaves
chopped fresh chives
Turkish seasoning blend (something from my spice cupboard... it contains:
salt, garlic, cumin, black pepper, oregano, paprika, sumac cayenne pepper and cilantro {Baldur dislikes cilantro but there's very little in this})
I served this at room temperature on baby Romaine lettuce leaves with sliced cucumber, both of which came from the garden here at Chez Baldur.

This salad was incredible but Robert skipped it and had a tuna salad sandwich on toasted whole wheat bread.

Baldur, what is a VBLT? Your lentil salad sounds YUM!

We had our first annual BLT luncheon (with tomatoes from our garden) today! Everyone made their own sandwiches. That was my idea cause with only six, everyone could make their own choices: kind of bread, toasted or not, mayo or not (two chose horseradish, of all things!), thick or thin sliced tomatoes, bacon as desired. Someone brought Missouri wine which was surprisingly good. Kathy brought two homemade pies - fresh peach and fresh apple. Yum. She said she'll teach me how to make crusts. Already had three people teach me and no luck. Think the problem is reaction - I see dough and have to knead it. My breads are always superb! : )

Andy talked about his time in Viet Nam which surprised us all. He told about being an interrogator (who knew) and about finally being diagnosed with PTSD two years ago. Apparently the VA is doing a great job now. Andy attends groups with other Viet Nam vets and says it is all helping. I'm happy for him. Happy he could share with us like that. He said he was in the war because "that's just the way it went" at that time in his life. He told about how odd it was to come home to protests, etc. There was no adjustment period: one minute you're scared to death and the next minute your Mom opens the door, says welcome home and off you go get a job and ... that's that. Except, it wasn't. He says the worst part now is anger - that it pops up out of nowhere and at least he understands that it's a function, or byproduct, of PTSD.

Someone told a hilarious story so that two of us were laughing so hard there were tears and snorts. Not sure what was wrong with the other four people as they just looked at us like we were kind of freaky. : ) I say a good belly laugh takes years off the aging process. If it doesn't, it should.

Lee wants a cat tree like ours. Think he's going to buy one. Yes, ridiculous expense but my Dad got it for me for Xmas and the felines adore it. They spend more time there than anywhere. I think they know it is for them and not us. Although, truth be told, it's for me. There is nothing more fun that watching cats play ... and now you know how exciting my life is.

Vegetarian Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato.
There are many odd vegetarian substitutes for most meats, even bacon.
The one familiar to me is made by Morningstar Farms and is rather like salty construction paper with a decorative red and white ripple design.
It is unpalatable if it is undercooked or overcooked so one must be very careful.
Baldur finds it best if one adds oil to the pan, which is certainly not part of the cooking instructions on the box. Alternately rub a little maple syrup on each slice with your finger before cooking.
In any case the end product is vaguely baconesque (+8 points), somewhat salty and at least crumbles into shards which bacon can be made to do when cooked a tad too long.

I totally understand the protests that accompanied the VietNam war but think those that fought in it were given an unfair homecoming. The Veterans of that conflict were definitely the least thanked for their contributions of any war in the United State's history.
I hope we as a people make ammends for that before those Veterans are only a memory.

Baldur

I would have needed a slice of each pie.

1720. 22 Aug 2009 18:56

Dragon

I think I too would have to have a slice of each pie, but they would have to be small slices as I would still be so full of BLT's. I can't imagine how tasty these would be made with fresh garden tomatoes! Also Dragon's first law of food is that if you can't drench it in caramel you can wrap it in bacon.

Also totally understand the whole cat tree thing. I'm always keeping my eye out for new and different cat trees at a decent price. I'm always amazed at how much they can get away with charging for something that is essentially scrap wood and left over carpet remnants. That said, if we had a bigger place we would have a ridiculous number of the darn things in the house. At the moment we only have 2 but they are well loved by all 3 cats and it's rare to see them cat-free. One of them has a cat hammock on it which I thought would be hilarious but it is actually the most useless thing. Well I shouldn't say that, I kept my laptop in there for months to keep it out of the way.
